Privacy Policy

Who we are

Elonir (elonir.com) is an independent editorial magazine covering science, culture, history, psychology, technology, and lifestyle. This website is operated from Lithuania and falls under EU jurisdiction, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

For any question about this policy or your personal data, you can contact us at: hello@elonir.com

What personal data we collect

We collect personal data in a few limited ways, described below: through analytics when you browse the site, through cookies and similar technologies, if you subscribe to our newsletter, and if you leave a comment on an article.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how visitors use the site, such as which articles are read and how long visitors stay. This data is collected in an aggregated and largely anonymized form. Google Analytics may process technical data such as your IP address, device and browser type, and general location (city/country level).

Analytics data is processed by Google Ireland Limited. You can read Google’s own privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Analytics cookies are only set after you give consent through our cookie banner.

Cookies

We use cookies for two purposes: essential cookies required for the site to function, and analytics cookies, which are optional and require your consent.

Cookie consent on this site is managed through CookieYes. When you first visit, you can accept or reject non-essential cookies, and you can change your choice at any time using the cookie settings link in the website footer.

If you leave a comment, you may optionally choose to have your name, email address, and website saved in a cookie for your convenience on future comments. This cookie lasts approximately one year.

Newsletter

If you choose to subscribe to our newsletter using the sign-up form, we collect your email address and pass it to Hostinger Reach (operated by Hostinger), the email service we use to manage and send newsletters. Your email address is used only to send you newsletter updates from Elonir and is not shared with any other third party.

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link included in every newsletter email.

Comments

When you leave a comment on the site, we collect the content of the comment along with your name, email address, and your IP address and browser user agent string, which helps us detect spam.

An anonymized hash of your email address may be sent to the Gravatar service (operated by Automattic) to check whether you have a profile picture associated with it. You can review the Gravatar service’s own privacy policy at https://automattic.com/privacy/. If your comment is approved, your profile picture may become visible publicly alongside your comment.

Comments and their associated metadata are retained indefinitely so that follow-up comments from you can be recognized automatically, rather than held for manual approval.

Media

If you upload images to this website (for example, as part of a comment or submission), you should avoid uploading images that include embedded location data (EXIF GPS), as other visitors may be able to extract that data from the image.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (for example, videos or social media posts). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if you had visited that other website directly, and that website may collect data about you, use cookies, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content.

Legal basis for processing

We process your personal data on the following legal bases under the GDPR: your consent, for analytics cookies and the newsletter sign-up; and our legitimate interest, for basic site security, spam prevention, and operating the comment system.

Who we share your data with

We share limited personal data with the service providers that help us run this site: Google (Analytics), Hostinger (hosting and the Hostinger Reach newsletter service), CookieYes (cookie consent management), and Automattic (Gravatar, for comment avatars). We do not sell your personal data to anyone.

How long we retain your data

Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics’ standard retention settings. Newsletter email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely unless you ask us to remove them.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you, to request correction or deletion of that data, to object to or restrict certain processing, to request a copy of your data in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time (for example, by rejecting cookies or unsubscribing from the newsletter). To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email address above.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Lithuanian State Data Protection Inspectorate (Valstybinė duomenų apsaugos inspekcija, VDAI) if you believe your data has been processed unlawfully.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time, for example as our tools or practices change. The date of the most recent update will be reflected on this page.
